What Are Anti Reflective Coatings On Screens?
In a nutshell, and probably a bit obvious, anti reflective coatings on screens reduce reflection and glare and provide an enhanced optical experience. They are used to ensure advertising displays and screens are fully visible and readable, even in bright daylight – reflecting UV rays and other light sources.
An anti reflective coating (or film) is applied to a screen with the end result being reductions in reflections by cancelling out a specific wavelength of light. For an uncoated glass component, typically 4% of incident light would be reflected at each surface. When an anti-reflective optical coating is used, reflection can be reduced to less than 0.1%
Why are anti reflective coatings on screens important?
Let’s look at some real world examples… Let’s say you are watching England vs Brazil in the World Cup Final next year in the local pub or sports bar (that got your attention, didn’t it?!) – Ideally the screen will be as clear as possible when Grealish slots home the winner… The last thing you want to see is a reflection of your mate big Tony jumping up and down in anticipation.
If you are a takeaway restaurant owner, you may be using digital screens to advertise your menu. Chance are, your venue is well lit and this may be compromising on the visual quality and clarity of your menu boards. By utilising an anti reflective screen, your customers will be able to view the menu in full and may even bulk up their order – especially if big Tony is in the house…
On a more serious note, and maybe a different form of perceived screen, recently we have all become accustomed to safety screens in the fight against COVID. Our parent company, Diamond Coatings, were inundated with enquiries for non reflective screens. Our customers found that the screens were giving off too much of a reflection, particularly in well-lit retail and medical environments.
We moved fast on this and supplied either anti reflective screens or provided an adhesive anti reflective film which vastly reduced the level of reflections on both sides of the screen, greatly improving user experience.
