ITO Conductive Glass
You might be thinking is there really a real need for conductive glass, and believe us, there is – it’s all around you in a variety of applications. Shocking, right? (sorry, that was bad…)
Conductive glass is a form of glass that has the ability to carry a charge across its surface. This is achieved by utilising ITO (Indium Tin Oxide).
What is ITO?
In short form, ITO is an optically clear substance that can conduct electricity. When ITO is coated onto a glass surface, the glass will become conductive, whilst remaining completely transparent.
With that cleared up (again, sorry), it might be useful to list some applications of ITO conductive glass, some of which may surprise you…
ITO Conductive Glass Applications
Let’s start with one we are all familiar with, the touch screen. Your phone or tablet might very well be utilising ITO glass to determine the location and gesture of your touch on screen. This works by running a low voltage across the glass screen.
When your finger touches, pinches or swipes, the screen can identify the command easily as there is a change in the charge at a specific set of locations.
ITO conductive glass is also exceptionally useful within the research and development industry, with a notable application being ITO slides to assist with electron microscopy – using an ITO slide, the need to charge the specimen being examined is removed.
Low emissivity glass windows are another good example of ITO conductive glass in action as they allow for a controlled and better regulation of temperatures which reduces heating / AC costs, which in turn reduces the environmental impact.
ITO conductive glass is also used in automotive and aerospace industries, as well as space exploration, military instrument usage and defence applications.
Combining the qualities of low electrical resistance and highly visible light transmission, ITO makes an effective EMI/RFI shield for electronic displays that need enhanced optical properties and moderate shielding effectiveness.
Diamond Coatings ITO Conductive Glass
We offer a range of glass substrates for ITO coatings and work with our customers based on their own specific requirements. We are also able to offer anti reflective and additional hard coat options on request.
Diamond Coatings can supply Indium Tin Oxide coated glass, vacuum deposited to any sheet resistance from as low as 2.5 Ohms/Sq.
