Looking For ITO Float Glass?
Maybe you are not even sure what Float Glass is, let alone ITO Float Glass, but don’t worry, we have your back – everything will be explained below.
What is Float Glass?
This type of glass is named after its manufacturing process – molten glass is added to a (very hot) bath of liquid tin. As glass is lighter than tin, it floats on the surface. As the molten glass is in a very pliable state, it spreads across the tin, creating a uniform, even layer.
The process results in a completely smooth surface, with no air bubbles or streaks, which provides a clear and undistorted finish. This process has been applied as far back as the 1960s.
Around 95% of all flat glass is manufactured using the float process. The qualities of Float Glass are the reason for this, which include a resistance to changing temperatures, a higher tolerance to scratches and an even and parallel surface to both sides.
So What is ITO Float Glass?
For us, this is where glass gets really interesting… Float Glass is used in the majority of glass applications and the introduction of ITO really does open up a world of possibilities.
Float Glass used in car windshields can now be electrically charged to provide a demisting function. This also applies to supermarket freezer doors and many other glass applications that would benefit from heat supplied as a small current across the surface.
One usage for ITO Float Glass is within electron microscopy. By applying a charge across the microscope slides, there is no need to charge the specimen, which prolongs the ‘shelf-life’ of said specimen.
ITO glass slides are used in R&D, scientific laboratories and educational institutions across the world.
